Meet our newest Field of Membership Partner: Third Act
When passion meets purpose, real change happens. We couldn’t be more excited to announce our new partnership with Third Act, an inspiring community of Americans over sixty dedicated to safeguarding our planet’s future. By bringing Third Act into our field of membership, we are opening the door for thousands of climate-conscious advocates to put their savings directly to work for the planet.
Together, this alignment turns passive savings into active climate solutions
This partnership creates a powerful natural synergy, uniting Third Act’s vast network of climate-focused elders with Clean Energy Credit Union’s specialized green financial services. By joining forces, Third Act members gain an exclusive banking alternative where they can ensure their hard-earned assets directly fund climate action and clean energy solutions rather than fossil fuel extraction. In turn, Clean Energy Credit Union expands its field of membership to include a vast network of active, purpose-driven activists.
As a Certified B Corporation, we believe financial cooperatives have a responsibility to create positive environmental and social impact. Every deposit, loan, and financial decision has the potential to move us closer to a cleaner, more resilient future.
Third Act is not just an average group of volunteers doing good work; it’s a genuine movement with real financial power behind it
Founded by environmentalist and author Bill McKibben in 2021, Third Act mobilizes elders across the country to use their experience, influence, and resources to drive meaningful change. Their members advocate for a rapid transition to renewable energy and work to stop the flow of finance that supports the expansion of fossil fuel infrastructure, including fracked gas pipelines and power plants, and liquefied natural gas terminals.

“I’ve long admired Bill McKibben’s ability to activate people over 60 into a force for environmental action, and that’s the spirit we want in our field of membership,” said Terri Mickelsen, CEO of Clean Energy Credit Union.
The scale of the movement that Third Act has built in such a short time is truly remarkable. “There are more than seventy million elders in this country, that number grows by ten thousand every year, and we control seventy percent of the nation’s financial assets,” said Third Act Campaign Director Michael Richardson. “We’re working to harness our elder power, our voice and our life experience to fundamentally transform our culture for ourselves, our children and our grandchildren.”
This partnership represents a powerful alignment of values
Third Act members are actively looking for ways to ensure their savings, investments, and everyday financial decisions to support the future they want to see. Clean Energy Credit Union was built for exactly that purpose.
When asked why Third Act wanted to join Clean Energy Credit Union’s field of membership, Richardson answered succinctly: “Simply put, Clean Energy Credit Union provides the only banking services where deposits are used exclusively to fund solar projects and home energy efficiency improvement.”
Through this partnership, eligible Third Act members and volunteers can join Clean Energy Credit Union’s financial cooperative, and access financial products designed to accelerate clean energy adoption, while knowing their deposits help support solar and energy efficiency projects across the country, and will never be invested in the systems causing so much harm to our world.

Third Act members understand that meaningful change often begins with everyday decisions
Credit unions exist because everyday people choose to support one another. Now, Third Act members and volunteers have another way to turn their values into action: joining a cooperative built to put their money to work to further climate action and clean energy solutions.
“Third Act understands that where money goes matters. Their work demonstrates the impact people can have when they bring their values to their financial decisions, and that’s a perspective we share,” said Terri Mickelsen, CEO of Clean Energy Credit Union.
When asked what everyday decisions Third Act would recommend everyone take to help in the fight against the climate crisis, Richardson had these tips to share:
- Live the Change: reduce household use of fossil-fuel-powered appliances, vehicles and machines; and, move money from financial institutions that finance fossil fuel projects.
- Make the Change: advocate for renewable energy and battery energy storage projects within local communities; and, advocate for climate legislation before the state legislature.
- Elect the Change: support candidates for federal, state, and local office who strongly support the rapid transition to renewable energy.

We’re proud to welcome Third Act Members into our field of membership and look forward to helping more individuals align their money with their values, building a healthier climate and a stronger future together.
