Primary Purpose of Position:

As Controller, you will be hands-on in maintaining Clean Energy Credit Union’s accounting integrity and financial reporting, playing a key role in supporting our mission-driven growth. You will directly establish and maintain accounting principles, practices, and procedures for the credit union’s fiscal records and financial reports, personally performing general and property accounting, cost accounting, and budgetary control work, and ensuring accuracy and full compliance with GAAP and applicable regulations. You will prepare and present the credit union’s financial results to the Board of Directors each month, and appraise operating results in terms of costs, budgets, operating policies, and trends, all while providing hands-on leadership, training, and supervision to the accounting team in a way that reflects our culture of excellence and cooperative values.

Essential Functions:

  • Reviews the status of cash account reconciliations weekly and balance sheet reconciliations monthly, directing research and corrections as necessary.
  • Oversee daily cash management, including identifying and placing appropriate investments reporting as needed to management.
  • Manages and develops accounting team members to maximize productivity, efficiency, and potential, including hiring, directing job assignments, monitoring performance, coaching, counseling, and training, while assuring compliance with regulatory requirements and CECU’s mission, values, policies, and work rules.
  • Appraises staff performance and provides recommendations for compensation, promotion, and termination, as appropriate.
  • Oversees third-party accounting and finance providers, holding them to agreed timelines, accuracy standards, and contract terms.
  • Selects, oversees, and evaluates third-party accounting and finance providers to ensure accurate, timely work and compliance with contract and regulatory requirements.
  • Responsible for all accrual entries (except tax and general valuation allowances), valuations of servicing rights and goodwill, and the establishment of reserves as needed.
  • Monitors accounting-related operational risks and control deficiencies and makes recommendations for corrective action.
  • Directs the monthly preparation and review of financials to assure accurate and timely financial information is provided to management and the Board of Directors, supporting effective operations and accountability to members and regulatory agencies.
  • Accurately produces all monthly and quarterly reports on a timely basis, including loan delinquency reports, the quarterly consolidated financial statements and call report (Form 5300), the monthly interest margin report, ratio reports, income statements, balance sheets, and monthly budget variance reports for management and the Board of Directors.
  • Prepares and presents the credit union’s financial results and policies to the Board of Directors and the Supervisory Committee each month, ensuring the information provided is timely, accurate, and clearly explained.
  • Prepares relevant reports for the Asset Liability Committee (ALCO) and serves as a member of the committee.
  • Assist NCUA examiners, the Supervisory Committee, and independent auditors by preparing and providing the information needed to perform their reviews.
  • Promotes accounting department projects and allocates financial and talent resources appropriately.
  • Prepares and forecasts salaries, payroll taxes, and insurance costs to support the company’s annual budgeting process; prepares and manages the Accounting Department budget; and oversees the creation and review of budget reports for the company prior to presentation to senior management.
  • Maintains accounting and reporting for investments, borrowings, and liquidity facilities, including subordinated debt relationships and collateral reporting.
  • Develops and maintains professional knowledge of, and the ability to implement, banking regulations and GAAP within the credit union industry.
  • Develops, documents, and maintains internal accounting controls and procedures to ensure safeguarding of assets, regulatory compliance, and accurate financial reporting.
  • Develops and maintains written procedures for key accounting functions and cross-trains staff to reduce operational and key-person risk.
  • Maintains fixed asset records and depreciation schedules for the credit union; prepares special financial schedules and performs other related duties or projects as assigned.
  • Research compliance with new and existing technical accounting issues.
  • Must comply with applicable laws and regulations, including but not limited to the Bank Secrecy Act, the Patriot Act, and the Office of Foreign Assets Control, and must maintain full compliance with applicable FASB, NCUA, regulations.
  • Supports credit union staff as needed and performs other tasks and duties as assigned.

  • Financial Acumen: Deep, working level understanding of financial planning, budgeting, and accounting principles, especially within the context of U.S. GAAP.

Education and Work Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a related field required; equivalent combination of education, professional certifications, and directly related experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in accounting, budget forecasting, and regulatory reporting, while adhering to generally accepted accounting principles and applicable State and Federal regulations.
  • Prior supervisory or team-leadership experience; credit union, CDFI, community bank or financial institution experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience preparing or reviewing NCUA Form 5300 Call Reports strongly preferred.
  • Experience coordinating external audits, internal audits, and regulatory examinations preferred.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or MBA a plus.
  • Prior experience presenting to a Board of Directors, Supervisory Committee, or ALCO strongly preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of accounting software required; experience with ALM modeling software preferred.
  • Expert use of Microsoft Excel and accounting software; advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Excellent math, communication, and analytical skills, with the ability to read, write, and understand English fluently.

  • Performs primarily sedentary work with limited physical exertion and occasional lifting of up to 25 lbs.
  • Must be able to routinely perform work on a computer for an average of 8 hours per day, and to work extended hours whenever required.
  • Position may be subject to irregular hours and may require occasional travel to attend office events in Denver or off-site conferences.
  • Must be capable of exercising the highest level of discretion on both internal and external confidential matters, and of performing responsibilities with composure under the stress of deadlines and requirements for extreme accuracy.
