Climate Silence While the Pressure Builds

How often do we talk about climate change in our daily lives, not just when disasters strike, but as part of the decisions we make and the priorities we hold?

As we move through this election cycle, one thing has stood out, climate change is barely being discussed. Not denied outright, just not addressed with the urgency it deserves, even as the evidence continues to build around us.

  • Across the country, communities are already feeling the pressure:
In Texas, Corpus Christi is approaching a water emergency, with reservoirs at critically low levels and the risk of supply shortages ahead.
  • Across the United States, drought has touched large portions of the country, straining water systems in multiple regions.
  • At the same time, demand for water is growing, with new infrastructure like data centers placing additional pressure on already stressed resources.
  • Along the East Coast, rising seas continue to threaten communities, infrastructure, and local economies.

These are not distant possibilities, they are present day realities shaping how people live, work, and plan for the future. And yet, much of this is missing from the conversation.

Why This Matters

Climate change is no longer a future issue. It is a financial issue, an infrastructure issue, and a community stability issue. Water shortages affect businesses, housing, and jobs. Rising seas affect property, insurance, and tax bases. Energy systems are under pressure from both demand and transition. These are the same systems that financial institutions depend on to serve their members and communities.

At our Clean Energy Credit Union, we take a clear position.

We support clean energy adoption and sustainability because we believe in science, and because we see firsthand how energy costs impact people’s lives. For households facing energy burdens, efficiency and clean energy are not abstract, they are practical tools for stability, affordability, and resilience. This is about taking care of people in a changing environment.

Are We Talking About What Matters?

As leaders and candidates ask for our attention and our votes, it’s worth noticing what is being prioritized and what is not.

Are the environmental realities we are facing part of the conversation? Are water shortages, rising risks, and long-term resilience being addressed? Or are these issues being quietly set aside.

And we are already seeing the consequences of looking away. In places like Corpus Christi, long-term confidence in water supply gave way to a near-term crisis, a reminder that when planning lags behind science, risks arrive faster than expected.

There is a lesson unfolding in real time. By the time something becomes an emergency, most of the decisions that shaped it have already been made. And what we choose to act on today becomes the reality we live with tomorrow.
